5 Tips for Taking Care of Your Skin This Winter
-
Moisturize Daily: Like really. Especially if your skin is wet such as when you come in from a rain, after washing your face in the morning, or after a bath or shower. Moisturizing when your skin is damp helps seal in the moisture from the water, giving it just a tad more power.
-
Choose said ↑ Moisturizer, carefully: Not all moisturizers are equal. In fact, some are down right bad for you. I don't mean some sketchy looking cream you found at a corner shop, but even some of the massive brand names. Petroleum-based moisturizers can further dry out your skin, leaving you off worse than if you do not moisturize at all. You should be looking for hydrating ingredients like lavender, chamomile, jojoba, and more, which help soothe dry, itchy skin.
- Exfoliate: Find an exfoliating mask and use it on your face and your hands, as well as gently on your lips, then follow immediately with moisture to truly see a smoother difference. Exfoliating body washes are also helpful in the winter months.
4. Use Hydrating Facial Cleansers: Most likely, the cleanser you use right now contains glycolic or salicylic acid, which are not really going to help the situation. Find a good hydrating facial cleanser and wash away.
5. Ban Hot Baths: Sounds a bit counter intuitive. I mean you are soaking wet, cold, and all you want is a hot hot bath. But don't, trust me. Sure it feels great, and so so warm, but at the same time, the heat breaks down the lipid barriers in the skin, which can lead to a loss of moisture. But if you do, make sure to use some quality bath products, ideally made with shea butter or the likes, to help counteract the damage.
